How do the giveaway rules and terms work?

Every giveaway has a rules page with KingSumo's default rules. On the Lifetime Plan you can write your own under Dashboard → Edit → 5. Rules and Terms.

What the default rules say

The default rules are general sweepstakes rules with sections such as How to Enter, Prizes, Odds, Arbitration and Winners List. Points to check before relying on them:

The giveaway is open to people aged 21 or older.
Residents of 13 countries are listed as not eligible: Taiwan, South Korea, Portugal, Italy, Austria, China, Russia, Hong Kong, Greece, France, Japan, Spain and the Czech Republic. KingSumo doesn't block entries from these countries; the rules only state it.
The rules are governed by United States law, and disputes by the laws of the State of Texas.

For the consent checkbox entrants see, read How does the marketing consent checkbox work?. If these don't fit your giveaway (for example, an international or EU audience), write your own rules.

How to use your own rules (Lifetime Plan)

Open the giveaway editor (dropdown next to the giveaway → Edit).
In section 5. Rules and Terms, untick Use Default Rules.
Write your rules in the box that appears, then click Save.

Custom rules are shown with a note that the creator changed them, that KingSumo accepts no liability for them, and how to report concerns to support@kingsumo.com (see How can I report fake giveaways?). Entrants also agree to the KingSumo Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Custom rules are part of the Lifetime Plan. On the Free plan every giveaway uses the default rules.

My custom rules are gone

Ticking Use Default Rules and clicking Save deletes your own rules. Keep a copy of your text before you switch back.

Where do entrants see the rules?

Through the rules link at the bottom of your giveaway page.

Are the default rules legal advice?

No. They're a general template. Check the laws that apply to your giveaway, and use your own rules if needed.

Will entrants from the listed countries be blocked?

No. KingSumo doesn't check where entrants live.
